The Maltese-flagged product tanker Kavomaleas (IMO 1042823, 74,978 DWT), was struck by two projectiles and set ablaze on July 20 during an apparent transit attempt through the Strait of Hormuz. The attack occurred approximately 8 nautical miles northwest of Kumzar in Oman's Musandam Governorate.
The double strike started a fire in the vessel's engine room. The crew were brought ashore safely. Iran claimed responsibility for targeting vessels transiting the strait.
Kavomaleas is a newly delivered vessel built in 2025, measuring 228 metres LOA with a beam of 36 metres. ShipAtlas data shows the vessel had departed Fujairah on July 18 and was last recorded in Omani waters prior to the attack. Previous port calls include Ras Tanura and Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
Investigation is ongoing. No independent investigation authority has been confirmed.
